In 1851, a United States Assay Office was established in San Francisco under the direction of Augustus Humbert. Humbert contracted with the firm of Moffat & Company to produce massive eight-sided "ingots" of pure gold.

On the obverse side of the ingot you will find the words "Pure Cal. Gold" directly under the eagle. The ribbon on the obverse side exhibits "999.9 THOUS." The text on the reverse side states: "Humbert Gold Ingot, Commemorative 2008, Pure California Gold, 2.5 Oz. Troy 999.9 Fine."
